subtle differences like the little hair strands and a smaller/different shaped cape are kinda cool :D

But ya, two paths for the same model do kinda suck. If you want to be able to use more archers for a map you could always export the model and portrait model, re-write the texture paths to use your skin, then import them. Because the portrait and model file for the night elf use different skins you could set them both to your skin, at least you wouldn't have to import your skin twice. Basically the synopsis of the tutorials on "making one model use different skin paths".
